Umberto Brindani begins his career through a collaboration with local Italian daily Gazzetta di Parma, the publication of two short essays and the translation of economic textbooks for publishing house Il Mulino in Bologna. In 1984 he is selected for the Istituto per la Formazione al Giornalismo in Milan. He lands his first job in the same year at the economic monthly Espansione. Later on he participates in the foundation of daily ItaliaOggi, and in 1987 he is hired at Panorama, where he works for 17 years, first in the economics section, then as special correspondent and then as chief editor of current events. In 1997 he becomes deputy editor (with Giuliano Ferrara) and condirector in 2000 (with Carlo Rossella). In 2004 he is called by Hachette-Rusconi publisher to direct the weekly Gente, which he redigns as a family news magazine. In June 2005 Mondadori publishers hire him to direct weekly Chi: under his direction, the magazine reaches its highest distribution level in history, printing 540,000 copies. In October of 2006 he becomes editor of Tv Sorrisi e Canzoni (which in 2007 reaches the second best sales performance among the top ten Italian weekly magazines) and later on also editor of Telepiù. In June 2008 he leaves Mondadori publishers, and in February 2009 he joins Rcs Mediagroup as condirector of weekly Oggi, to then become editor in February 2010.
