“The book by Gad Lerner is one of the finest of the season and one of the most unusual written by an Italian journalist. In Scintille he talks openly about his family and its history, trying in so doing to understand himself better through their experience and their surroundings. While his parents weren’t “able to deal with the painful conflicts of history that crashed in on their lives” and that as a result “the need for closure fell on the following generation”, there remains the comparison between today and yesterday, between how his parents were and how they are now, between what Beirut and Lebanon were and what they are now. And not only of Beirut and Lebanon, because the problems of that part of the world are integral to the flow of history that involves all of us. Through the experience of Lerner’s parents we gain insight into the devastation of the 20th century and turn in trepidation to the 21st” Goffredo Fofi
