The amount of TV space taken up by politics and politicians (and journalists) in Italy is significantly greater than in other Western countries. Countless current affairs talk shows clog the airwaves while politicians (and journalists) also appear in a wide variety of TV shows which have no direct relation to politics or journalism at all. Journalists are also frequently the de facto spokesperson of political points of view across the spectrum, leading to the curious spectacle of journalists interviewing journalists on weighty issues of the day. Self-referential to put it mildly. What’s going on?
